Small, striking maple of the north woods, usually found in the understory. Broadly pointed maple leaves, reddish buds and branchlets, and distinctively gray, green and white striped bark make this maple a must as a small specimen tree or a grouping in natural gardens and landscapes. Flowers are in lavish, hanging racemes and are much showier than expected--few people realize how pretty maple flowers are. Grow in full sun with ample moisture, or in light shade, to bring out the form and features of this great native maple. The Asian stripe bark maples are enjoying great recognition of late, but our own local still waits in the wings.
